this island is still dragging on. I havn’ t been working on it much lately but finally got around to building another door. I wanted the doors to be somewhat hidden so I tried to make it look like the finished recessed panel on the end (second photo) the door opens which was a surprise but gets caught in the hinge side about 1/3 way open. This one doesn’ t matter much as the tr a sh is behind it and there is onl y a small storage area behind, w hich is going to be for the cat food. The other door will need to open more as that is where some big things go like an air fryer. I think if i sand the island’s trim board a little it will help.
still to do:
add veneer board and 1/4 round trim to the trash door, build right side door, adjust drawer and add 1/4 trim to that

How is it having the microwave at knee height? I’m designing our kitchen and have considered putting it there, mostly for my kids.

Here’s something I’ve seen all over Bangkok that I absolutely love. It's a small but very nice touch, having the garbage can come out like that

That is nice, and under the sink it doesn’t really matter, since those are mostly useless cabinets anyway.

its great for the kids, i dont mind it. its 100x better than having it on the counter with the limited counter space we already have. the island is new but the rest of the kitchen was already in place so I would have to hack up / replace a cabinet if i wanted to put it over the stove. my last house had it over the stove. I’d probably chose the island vs over the stove. the island is bar height tho so its higher than it would be in a standard height cabinet.

that is pretty cool. with the way my trash is, its always over flowing and would never close.

Ours is set beneath the counter and it does not bother me at all. Gives the kitchen a much cleaner look by having almost every appliance low
